Karsh in discussion with Forbes Helem

In
his lifetime, Forbes Helem never spoke about “near death” or
“out-of-body” experiences.
In the 1940’s, anyone relating such an experience outside of a clinical setting would be met with skepticism or ridicule. But Forbes was a highly intelligent man with an excellent grasp of the real world. In his early years, Forbes had some form of traumatic, life-threatening experience. As he balanced on the edge of life, he had a clear vision of something profound watching over him. When he recovered, he could not articulate what he had seen and found no way to share his vision. He sought advice from two of his contemporaries, noted portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh and animator Norman McLaren. Forbes needed assistance to get past his block, and describe the indescribable. “Photogram Number 6” became the closest way for Forbes to share his experience. Over time, he found others who understood his experience through the shared awareness evoked by “Photogram Number 6”. If there is a pre-heavenly state, then “Photogram Number 6” may give us some insight and comfort for an uncharted journey.
